Running Away From Commitment!
Jonah 1:1-3
1 Now the word of the Lord came unto Jonah the son of Amittai, saying,2 Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry against it; for their wickedness is come up before me.3 But Jonah rose up to flee unto Tarshish from the presence of the Lord, and went down to Joppa; and he found a ship going to Tarshish: so he paid the fare thereof, and went down into it, to go with them unto Tarshish from the presence of the Lord.
RUN AWAY
1
a : to leave quickly in order to avoid or escape something
Jonah was a man who was committed to God. He was a prophet served the Lord yet at this point in his life he ran away from his commitment to God. He knew what he had to do yet still he did not want to do it. Have you ever been committed to something in your life yet you decide to runaway to what you were one committed too?
Where Are You Going
Jonah 1:4 But the Lord sent out a great wind into the sea, and there was a mighty tempest in the sea, so that the ship was like to be broken.
When you care about someone enough you just don't let them walk away. God went after Jonah. He sent out a great wind Where are you going Jonah? Please tell me Jonah where? In my life it is easy to drop someone who i have not had a commitment to but its a different story to when I have had a commitment with. Where are you going he sent after him because he didn't want for him to leave the commitment they had!
Will You Take me Back
re·pent
feel or express sincere regret or remorse about one's wrongdoing or sin.
Jonah 2:1-4
Then Jonah prayed unto the Lord his God out of the fish's belly,2 And said, I cried by reason of mine affliction unto the Lord, and he heard me; out of the belly of hell cried I, and thou heardest my voice.3 For thou hadst cast me into the deep, in the midst of the seas; and the floods compassed me about: all thy billows and thy waves passed over me.4 Then I said, I am cast out of thy sight; yet I will look again toward thy holy temple.
Jonah Sat in the belly of the whale repenting. There is a different story when you you go to someone and ask them to take you back and your not really sorry for what you did then coming back only to do what you did all over again. Jonah wasn't going to run again this time. The prodigal son in luke 15 came to himself meaning he went through true repentance and he was going to change things in his life. No one had to force him to come home to the father. No one had to force him to change or to recommit me did it on his own! So God and Jonah started their commitment again!!! Jonah 2:10 And the Lord spake unto the fish, and it vomited out Jonah upon the dry land.
Re-commitment
re·com·mit
commit again.
Jonah 3:1-3
1 And the word of the Lord came unto Jonah the second time, saying,2 Arise, go unto Nineveh, that great city, and preach unto it the preaching that I bid thee.3 So Jonah arose, and went unto Nineveh, according to the word of the Lord. Now Nineveh was an exceeding great city of three days' journey.
Jonah recommitted!! He committed again to what he was once committed to. It is not always easy to recommit but you can't be forced if Jonah hadnt really repented and really wanted to turn back to his commitment with God he would have never recommitted. Just as the prodigal would have never wanted to come home but he did. They were able to have a relationship again where their was once no relationship. Where there was no commitment!
